I wonder if there's a subtext about how the Japanese elite responded to Western imperialism by creating their own aggressive empire, leading to huge destruction across eastern Asia. (World War II is one of many taboo subjects that the Japanese usually avoid discussing openly, so some of them deal with it indirectly...)
That's world history itself though. From thousands of years BC to not too long ago, you could basically count on that people not from your culture/language/religion were racing to become stronger than you so they could dominate you, because the strongest survive.
It's all a chain reaction, where fighting and war was the only way to survive and it was all most people ever knew. It's only the last century that we're finally starting to live in peace, that we realize the world doesn't need to be "conquer, or else be conquered", that there's another way.
Yup having a bad childhood doesn't give validation to the atrocities of adulthood
thank god nami understood the other side! being angry at arlong is faor we all are coz it happened to nami someoen we know. but looking at their side they were oppressed by humans who did the same things to them as arlong did to the one human village that nami was in.
i love that oda isnt making us forgive arlong but just giving us the two sides which is how reality works, theres always another side
its up to u how you see it and what side you accept
and know they're giving us the villains pov that'll possibly melt our hearts and understand them. hmp
still, no amount of backstory is going to make me like arlong
arlong's actions are understandable but unnecessary, his actions are too bad and unforgivable, at least we get to know quite the story behind all of arlong and the sun pirates in the next episodes
Don’t think I can eat fish again after this
Why not? Don't forget the fact that Fish-men eat fish. Hachi runs a TAKO-yaki shop, for goodness' sake!
(well, I don't like sea food much* myself, so even though I ain't disgusted by this, I'd use any other excuse not to eat sea food, so I kinda know how you feel).
*except a few kinds of fish, preferably fried, and if not, then grilled. oh, and I ate shark meat once. it was tough to chew but didn't taste too bad.
"Nothing weird here, just a human running a cannibal shop."
There's a Danish movie where this pretty much happens.
It's a funny one, more like dark humor-ish
Lmao
I don't eat fish either ways xD
some of villains always have reasons why they’re villains but if blackbeard have past or reason why he is a villain sorry but no and also human and fish-men are both wrong… it’s really hard for fish-men when humans keep discriminating them and ruining their island, their reasons are clearly understandable but just like hatchi said they’ve got too far and did terrible just like human did to them
I mean Arlong did the same thing that human did to him so he's basically the celestial dragon of fishman island.
But he did it as a form of pay back to make humans feel the pain they suffered, he would never treat another Merman in such a manner unlike celestial dragons who would treat ALL forms of life like trash and personal plaything. If Arlong saw what was Hordy doing i'm pretty sure he'd be horrified and disgusted by it and like Hachi oppose them immediately.
Celestial fish
Arlong looked mad ugly as a child 😭😂 ig some of the celestial dragon genes got in him some way or the other huh
what
I feel like if Namis "mom" (forgot her name) stayed quite, then arlong woulda just left like bro
Yeah, but Vin Diesel's spirit lives within Nami's mom.
Family forever ✊
arlong wouldnt left because he is collecting fine from villagers and those who cant pay will be killed
Bellemere
I cant believe that the one who save the fish men island is a pirate not a navy who proclaim themselves justice😔
So both Fishman and Humans are at fault here
Another example of how everything connects in One Piece, with Laboon and Brook, and now with Arlong and Jinbei(is it Jinbei or Jimbei I hear Jinbei but it says Jimbei-)
Damn I love Whitebeard
Back in the 17th century at the start of the Edo Era, when the new Catholic faith was considered a threat by the ruling elite, people were forced to step on Christian icons to prove their loyalty, just like in this episode. (See the movie THE SILENCE.)
Oda knows his history!
Didn't know about it. Thanks.
2016?
Ohh thanks for sharing. I didn't know about this.
I like how Oda made One Piece a fun fantasy story but also based on reality like racism between fish-man and humans
I like it as well
I wish they just threw the guy in the barrel out in the ocean
04:25
I still hate Arlong with a burning passion and that will never change even 1%
zamn
one piece bussin bussin
Hmm the cycle hatred is not one that can be broken easily, Interested in how this is going to play out.
Talk no jutsu and a certain ramen loving guy will be required to break it
Are you talking about Raizel by any chance from Noblesse!
No the person is talking about Naruto
Not matter how horrible Arlong was to humans I still feel he was better than Hordy as a villain and captain. He cares so deeply for his subordinates that he'd even call them his brethren I still remember how enraged he was when Luffy used his injured men as merman shields, but Hordy like he did in the previous episode used one of his men as a shield like it was nothing heck he even laughed after.
It's good to see arlong's POV too
OPARIO
Arlong might be the only character whose existence is pure annoying.I mean, even Blackbeard is kinda annoying but hes kinda cool and his laugh is nice and Im sure hell be a good antagonist,on the other hand,Arlong-
Jimbei says of Otohime and Fisher Tiger: "Nobody can tell who was right or wrong". Well I can definitely say Fisher Tiger was 100% right. He freed his enslaved people from psychopaths, there can be no wrong in that. I don't even know how Jimbei can say this.
yk i really like how we understand Arlong’s pov and why he did what he did, yet that still doesn’t excuse him for his terrible acts. Also this whole history really gives perspective on the motives of the fishmen.
